Fourteen-year-old Patrick Eaton was raised on the amazing tales of his forefathers, each of whom were intrepid explorers in their own times. But here in the twenty-first century, Patrick seriously doubts whether he will have a similar opportunity. The world is just too small now… and all the frontiers are gone. On his last day of middle school, Patrick anticipates spending another ordinary summer with his grandfather. But when he arrives home, news of a family misfortune compels him to reconsider his life and the people he cares about. And like all hardships, this one has a silver lining… Patrick is offered the incredible opportunity to accompany his father (a geologist) on a business trip to Azerbaijan. The night before they leave, his grandfather hands him a mysterious gift – making Patrick promise not to open it until his journey is under way. Twenty-four hours later, Patrick unwraps a secret family journal that leads him and his father on an unexpected adventure across the Silk Road. Along the way, they discover secret codes, ancient cultures, political intrigue, buried treasure… and family legacies.

Katen’s debut novel is certainly one to take note of. The writing is compelling and flows effortlessly and will surely hold the attention of readers both young and old. The book is also thoroughly researched, and all readers are sure to learn something and gain new perspective on a fascinating part of the world. While young readers will find the main character to be likeable and relatable, the novel has an old soul and is reminiscent of an Indiana Jones-type story. Older readers will also no doubt see themselves in the main character and in the transformation he undergoes over the course of the story. The virtues of curiosity, perseverance, courage, and innovation flow through the veins of the novel, and I look forward to sharing it with my children when they are older.
The author should be proud of this debut effort. I’ll be looking forward to seeing where he goes from here.

Chaturanga edition by Andrew C Katen Children eBooks Reviews
I was one of the lucky people who read the pre-publication copy. Unbelievable! The author penned a brilliantly-written and gripping adventure story for young readers using the global oil & gas sectors as a backdrop. However, as an adult, I couldn't put it down! I learned much about Central Asian geopolitics and 'the Game' - a centuries-long East vs West 'chess match' for influence and control. I am a professional energy expert and bought thirty copies to send to my energy friends with adolescent children, who are certainly not learning this fascinating stuff in their classrooms. I cannot rave enough about this book and can promise one thing you'll never look at inter-generational relationships or Central Asia or the energy sector or geopolitics in the same way as before. Well done, Andrew Katen! (Please come out with another book soon!) - Steve Doyle/President - BtuBaron LLC
Never pandering and always brisk, always informative but never dull, Chaturanga, Mr. Katen's debut novel, is an exquisitely balanced exercise in educational entertainment, a gripping and mysterious thrill-ride through the sands of time and place. It is no mere textbook, nor some high-calorie brain candy. Instead, it is a deftly paced work of fiction so fluid, so fun, that one is excused for failing to note how much information is being unpacked as the pages unfold.
Our hero is Patrick Eaton, and like many of us, he is a dreamer. He yearns to strike out for the frontier, to discover for himself the fabulous adventures lived by previous generations of Eaton men. But Patrick is trapped in school, trapped in suburbia, and seemingly trapped in an era when all the adventures have already occurred, and when all the great lands have already been explored.
It just doesn't seem fair. And Patrick wonders Could adventure itself be a relic of a bygone era?
Thankfully, the answer is a resounding "no"…for Patrick and the readers of Chaturanga alike.
Patrick gets his wish for adventure when he is caught up in an ancient struggle for international resources, land and power. What makes his journey so compelling is that this struggle, this "great game" taking place all around him, occurs in a part of the world largely ignored by western authors Central Asia.
As Mr. Katen guides us deep into the hearts, minds, histories, and even soils of Turkestan, this nexus of east/west philosophy and culture truly flowers. Nations absent from many stories - Turkmenistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan - receive their full due as immensely important chess pieces in a struggle for global leverage and survival. With a rich eye for detail and key insight into the motivations and machinations of the ancient region, Mr. Katen offers a riveting account of life on the other side of the world and an age-appropriate primer on international geopolitics perfect for teens and young adults.
A stunningly effective mishmash of global intrigue, ancient history, and personal discovery, Chaturanga is a must-buy for any parent on the lookout for a great story chock full of educational content. Mr. Katen has a real flair for suspense, and as he winds through his tale of the Eaton men, their search for true adventure becomes our own, their courage ours.
For in the end, Patrick Eaton strives to follow the path of his forebears for the same reason Marco Polo took to the Silk Road, and the same reason we sit down to read a book like Chaturanga to find the adventure still hiding just under the seams of our modern world.
I received a free pre-release galley of this book for review.
After reading Chaturanga, I find the story quite fascinated and excited. It is about 14-year old Patrick doing adventure travels through Central Area where his Great Grandfather went decades ago. It is full of adventure, especially for 14 year old boy who see people and places in Central Asian countries at the same time he looks for treasures per information in his Great Grandfather's documents. The novel is well blend with history, geography, geology, archeology, politics, and cultures. Mr. Katen even uses pronunciation guide of names of places such as countries and communities. This makes novel an excellent educational material for young people from 16 to adult to read. I enjoy reading the novel because while the story is fiction, I learn a great deal about the history, geography, archeology, and culture of Central Asia. That is my kind of novel that I like to read. Mr. Katan is an excellent writer.
Contempary story that brings life and insight to our present time. Hope we get another book soon from this young man.
This book was great mix of history, geography, politics, friendships and suspense. A well written story that kept me turning the pages.
I loved this book and am sad I have reached the end. Caten paints such vivid pictures with his writing. I really appreciated his descriptions. It took me a long time to get through the book just because his vivid descriptions of places would spark more curiosity and I'd have to look them up and find out more. It's hard to not love the characters too.
I love reading. I'm a big Tom Clancy fan. I would describe this as a Tom Clancy book for teens that adults will love as well. The story takes you across the middle east and has several unexpected twists and turns with an ending that brought tears to my eyes. I read it in two days and my only problem will be waiting for his second book. I've recommended this book to all my friends and family.
